Acadia National Park

On the Northern Coast of Maine sits a National Park strewn with rocky outcrops, lakes and cliffs of stone slab that meet slamming ocean waves.

The weather wasn't kind to us while we checked out Acadia, but perhaps the foreboding clouds and the ever-present mist enhanced the rugged beauty.

With the campsites full we devoted only an afternoon to the main section of the Park before driving back out and checking out the nearby Schoodic Peninsula the following morning.

Driving the Park Loop Road, we stopped at Otter Point and scaled the large slabs of stone fronting the Gulf of Maine, all the while checking out the pools of water trapped in nooks and crannies in the rocks.

Next the kids hunted for crabs and mussels during a beachcombing session at Little Hunters Beach.

Having a 'Jordan' with us, we of course checked out Jordan Pond, where swimming is not allowed but regardless, Dash couldn't resist jumping in with all of his clothes on!

Unfortunately the Visitor Centre at Hulls Cove was just closing as we arrived, so we hit the road.

Disappointment was short-lived for Nath and Brendan who spied signage for BBQ brisket and stopped at a roadside eatery for their fill.

The kids were delighted when we parked door to door at a nearby Walmart.

They spent the night jumping from van to van - what FUN!!

The following morning we drove north to the Schoodic Peninsula and climbed the rocky cliff faces fronting the ocean.

Heading north on Highway 1, we enjoyed a picnic lunch in Cherryfield, the Blueberry Capital of North America - although we didn't see any blueberries!

Then just shy of the Canadian border we found a lakeside campground where all of the kids took turns leaping off the floating pontoons into the dark, chilly waters of the lake.

Some local lads challenged Nath to a game of "King of the Dock" and his response was to charge them off the pontoon.

It was a fun way to end our time in Maine.
